Evaluation of hydrocarbon generation potential of source rock using two-dimensional modeling of sedimentary basin: a case study in North Dezful Embayment, Southwest Iran

Abstract Early Cretaceous and Jurassic sequences in the southwestern Iran host some of largest hydrocarbon reservoirs globe. This study is aimed at evaluating maturity fluids, migration paths, characteristics Pabdeh, Kazhdumi, Garu Sargelu source rocks this region. For purpose, 27 samples Pabdeh Kazhdumi Formations from wells northern part Dezful Embayment were chemically evaluated by Rock–Eval pyrolysis. OpenFlow™ software was utilized to analyze burial history, conduct 1D thermal modeling four oilfields perform 2D on a section estimate extension sediments. Results showed that kerogens Sargelu, properly matured, leading outflow, although organic matter content Formation too immature produce any hydrocarbon. Based plot hydrogen index (HI) versus Tmax, it found studied formations dominated type II kerogen mixed species III kerogens. path leakage up an overlying seal prevented hydrocarbons seeping out surface.
